Impacts and challenges of ICT in WAEC assessment practices

  • With the successful deployment of Information Communication Technology in assessment practices, the West African Examinations Council has evolved new ways of actualizing its mandate. However, ever increasing candidature and globalization have brought to the fore challenges bordering on operational procedures, inadequate infrastructure and equipment, capacity building and technical know how to cope with timely, efficient and excellent discharge of services to its customers.

    This paper, therefore, appraises the effectiveness and scope of the computerization processes especially in the areas of e-Registration and Online Result Checking. More importantly, the paper attempts to identify current and future security challenges of the computerization processes and focuses on necessary measures to check them.

    Since growth has many faces and development depends on people, the paper concludes that, capacity building, through training and retraining of personnel, critical review of existing contractual agreements with ICT partners with a view to taking charge fully should be pursued vigorously. The paper states further that the acquisition of the best hardware and solutions in ICT will enhance efficiency, sustainability and help the Council to continuously be on top of all the identified challenges.
