Connecting and empowering teachers through assessment
Historically, teachers in classrooms have had a very lonely role working with their students towards better learning outcomes. They are always caught between teaching students, and monitoring learning and categorising students on the basis of teacher devised assessments. The Queensland Curriculum Assessment and Reporting (QCAR) Framework is changing the way teachers in Years 1 -9 teach. The Framework represents an interrelationship between clearly specified core curriculum and the principles of high-quality assessment systems instantiated through centrally-devised common assessment tasks and everyday teacher developed assessment. The components of the framework, provide teachers with a range of opportunities to engage with their colleagues in professional dialogue about curriculum, standards and assessment. In particular, the Queensland Comparable Assessment Tasks (QCATs) and the online Assessment Bank provide opportunities for professional partnerships amongst teachers both within and outside of their classrooms as they develop their skills as assessors.
